Grrrr ... I feel victimised. My car got those scratch marks just becoz' a driver didn't measure up with their own judgement to double park a narrow lane which hardly can fit two cars. Spent literally the whole 1st day hari raya @ parents in law's place. This year seems a lil' bit subdued the only things that made the nite slightly different was the fireworks. I was trying hard this year not to spend any on the fireworks (tall order) but finally succumbed to the relentless chants from thin air he.ehe.. Farewell Sending Off for Lil' Bro'

Tonite farewell sending off for our youngest member was mixed feelings for all. Well perhaps he's the last one to go, hence, somehow it's entirely a different scenario altogether. We all wish him good luck and the best in his studies and I'm sure he'll cope with the sudden cultural change and be back with flying colours.

If I can remember clearly the last family member to go was at one time flying back to Scotland 2 days after the infamous 911 saga happened. We're dead worried back then knowing that he's travelling from Heathrow airport and back to Glasgow alone. That's the past and time is flying fast these days so naturally you won't feel the pace by the time it's a done thing. I guess we worry too much sometime ....

The fact that there were only four of us, didn't deter us to continue with the plan. Unfortunately the following sunday is the Rafting Klassik, so we can't muster the numbers or critical mass so to speak. Apart from one member who suffered dehydration, else it was another worthwhile appointment with the beauty of mother nature. You got to experience it first so describing them in words is no justice. Nite Camp Out @ Batu Apoi, Temburong

The impromptu plan kicked off well than expected last weekend and it started as early as 7 am picking up the boys along the way.

We're @ Kuala Lurah check point by 9 am, travelled thru' Limbang, had brunch @ Bangar, Temburong before midday, proceeded to Selapon, Batu Apoi, trekked thru' at least 1 and 1/2 hour and reached our camping spot by 2 pm. We kind of missed the 2nd river crossing but later decided to chose our sweet "spot" by moving upstream although it was supposed to take at least 1 hour had we not missed it.

Nice place, clean and almost clear water stream but most of us end up with lil' sleep becoz' of fren's heavy snoring .. hu..huu.. But I was slightly put off with the humidity tho' and was perspiring even till late nite despite having cold evening splash.

Packed and left before midday the next morning, took lunch, dropped by @ the long house (1st ever experience) before heading to Limbang and back to Brunei. Slightly held up at least an hour @ the Pendaruan ferry crossing and another hour @ the Tedungan immigration. By the time I'm home it was already close to 9 pm and .. oh yes.. darn .. I'm working the next day. Energy level was very low but worthwhile experience .. thinking of doing another one .. lets see ... maybe Labi ...

Next weekend and that's it .. pretty short notice tho', so have to rush a bit getting the basic stuffs. Another posting attempt going well than expected ..he.he. That's the view from the Pan Pacific Hotel's room. It's a 5 star hotel .. so naturally the level of comfort is just as expected. I think it's the same kind of comfort you would get by staying at Empire Hotel. That's 6,000 baht or close to B$300 per night but it's a company business trip so who cares really ....

It's only late tonite that I finally manage to get in touch with family back at home but unfortunately the kids are already in bed early. The quality of broadband internet is superb so video chatting is better and cheaper than using the phone.

Leave me no choice but my boss is pushing the idea to me becoz' this guy is possibly fed up with his job, hence decided to work somewhere else or rather be cross posted. In the end I've to attend many meetings and travelling to and fro my head office is troublesome. But the positives are that you get to see more bosses, get to see the corporate picture more clearer, maybe getting myself more "visible" ..duh.. That's life .. want to climb the career ladder fast, then such thing is no longer optional ... nevermind .. work harder .. more money ... more debts ... more problems ... huwa huwa...

Well last nite it rained real real heavy and we're almost ... I meant almost caught with a flooding livin' room. That was a real close call really .. otherwise the whole carpetings would be in ruin. MPP Team Building

Perhaps one of the many team building exercises which I feel was really worthwhile experiencing. It was a simple boat ride at KB river going upstream to the Kuala Balai and back forth which literally took more than 5 hours. We've funs on board, were kept busy with team building actvities as usual and maybe this could be a good proposition for a family outing. Rental is like less than $500 so I guess that's still good value for money. Only then I learnt that there's a skull hut at Kuala Balai just next to the river bank. Yes these are real collections of skulls ... eerie ... if you're adventurous enough then you may consider staying overnight but be .. be very afraid .... hehe ..

Print Spooler Problem

I was tinkering and trying hard to figure out my print spooling problem. I've checked the dependency service (RPC) but still can't restart my printer spool service. Only then I realised that some printer like Lexmark normally installs a service LexBCES and makes the printer spooler dependent to it. I think this might be handy for others who may encounter similar problem.

Using command prompt just type sc config spooler depend= RPCSS and hit enter key and walla .... solve this pain in the neck.

My last post was Monday ... a week apart to be exact ... that was damned fast ... I was practically sidelined with flu last week and on the road to recovery. Hopefully it's over by this week. Unfortunately, the other family members are slowly getting into the same cycle. Well, we'll get over it soon and I'm sure we'll.

The current bad weather spell that persists will be a done thing pretty soon. But I heard that the El Niño will follow soon and learnt that it's going to be hotter than the last occurence in 1998. I managed to get hold of some pixs during my stays at the work barge years ago. This one was taken during her anchor/move activities when she was mooring up next to the platform to commence the construction activities. To get her into position and dropping anchors took almost the whole daylight ... slow and painful process he.he..

The bunk beds for two is infact the 2nd best option available on board. Last year I was damned lucky to get the reserved and very limited single bed room since there's no more beds to spare :) ... good foods, free laundry service to name a few but outside it's all sea water ... next assignment will be April this year.

I was googling for construction barge technical specs and inadvertently stumbled across this blog piece. Sheer coincidence I must say ...

I've been to Lewek Conqueror many times since its 1st inception to provide offshore construction services which was hired by local contractor SKSWood back then. I'm pretty sure it's not easy really in the shoes of these marine crews who spend big chunks of their weeks in and out offshore. Good money but limited recreational life is a norm but life has to go on.

I presume I must have brushed shoulders with this blogger for all that I can remember during my short stays at the barge. So little is yet spared for the slightest figment of imaginations .... but it brings a very lasting lifetime impression ...

I'm sure it was hardly a blink for some and yet before you even realised it, the long school holidays are over and done for good at least for a while now. So as usual "abnormal" traffics will be the key feature for tomorrow but gosh ... lucky me becoz' I won't be driving the kids to school. I'll be in the office by the time people are hitting the roads with frenzy. I just can imagine those people who are unfortunate or rather destined to be caught day in day out with heavy traffics even during normal days. For me being caught in the traffics is equivalent to a bad day in the office, so I'm staying out of the way as much as possible.

My sis' gave birth to her 2nd baby which is a girl this week. That's the 12th addition to existing arrays of nieces and nephews to our growing family. I made the visitation last night at RIPAS and it was such a heavy downpour that literally travelling in excess of 80km/h along the coastal highway was just too risky. No wonder accidents happen so easy the moment it starts raining. It was a sigh of relief when I finally made the long journey safely back home.

The last few weeks were very sluggish indeed. I'm into the a sequence of unusual eating diets, erratic sleeping patterns and feeling of restlessness like that someting is not quite right with my life. To cap it off I was consigned to be on duty last weekends plus today's X'mas holiday, so practically most of my time over those three days was spent at home waiting for duty calls. I thought we'll be winding down a bit towards the end of the year but with the bosses not around and coupled with work mates on long holidays I must be dreaming then. I hope that it's just a temporary glitch, maybe too much distressing works to take care of in short space of times.

However, I feel that espeed is a lot better today, so I thought maybe telbru has fixed their uplink problems. I was making minimal visits to the internets last 2 weeks to avoid being wholly frustrated with its slowness. So I'm kind off resorting to damage limitation exercise. The signs looking good ... I'm expecting something very promising these coming days to come .... you never know ....

Big smiles for all and this signifies the capping of another succesful year for the team. Big challenges ahead for next year with more major projects in the frame but for now I'm only thinking of stepping off the pedals with the remaining days of this year .... next year business is next year worries.

Brunei Marathon 2006

I just don't know what to say about this year marathon .... mixed feelings really. My high expectation somehow is slightly dampened with the drizzlings of the early morning rain. My only consolation would probably be finishing my 10km run a lot better than expected. Spotted ranoadidas and c180k with their lens capturing those big moments along the way. That's cool effort considering that you're forgoing the opportunities to participate in the event.

But one thing for sure, the organiser certainly need to put their sleeves up, learn from their mistakes and incorporate them for future improvements. Nevertheless, I'll be there to support this event next year regardless anyway ... running is fun if you enjoy it ...

Useful link < http://www.maplandia.com/ > for checking out google map without installing the actual software which is resource hungry. You can still zoom and scan the areas as well which is just all that we need to serve the purpose.
Now I can clearly see my marathon route and soon will be hitting the road to check in one of the hotels down there to avoid early morning travel. Tomorrow will be full of adrenalin rush and I'm sure it's going to be real fun for all.

"Holiday" less December

Negotiation Skills Workshop

Today concludes my last day of the 3 days workshop on "negotiation skills". It is jointly conducted by a couple which I think is very sweet ... who says husband and wife can't work together ...

Having to last the 3 days with real negotiation simulations, I mean with elements of cheating, hassling, manipulating, misdirecting, bla..bla ... with your opponents, it's a very draining exercise. Draining in the sense that you couldn't care less with your personal values at times of "artificial" desperations to gain unfair advantages. The fact that these participants are your working counterparts that you know well just add up more spices to the whole exercise.

However, what strikes me most is certainly the exchange of "virtual" gifts to participants during the final session which we write in the papers and distribute them. It may looks like "face" value or meaningless efforts but we come to a realisation that we're indirectly reinforcing our "core" values despite being the "dirty negotiators" over that 3 days. I'm sure this workshop will give very lasting impressions on both my life and career perspectives. We'll never stop learning and learning and learning and ........

Staff : That's good ... I can be spared becoz' I'm the longest serving staff with dedication, discipline .. bla. bla.. so I got more "points" ...

Senior MGT : No.. no ...to be exact we'll "point" fingers to those who we want to be made redundant ... LOL !!

Today we're celebrating yet another safety milestone. To achieve 5 millions manhours without TRC or "total recordable cases" is certainly a world class achievement. It's not just about breaking the statistics that counts but it's all about making our workplaces and working conditions safer. In other words, the workers get to go home to their loved ones without being seriously injured.

3 key ingredients that were reemphasised if we're to sustain or better this achievement ...ie., the ability to intervene, the courage to intervene and the show of appreciations when our unsafe actions are being intervened.

And ... and ... I also got the opportunity to see in person, an ex forumer that made headlines few years back. Definitely no name disclosure but that just shows how small Brunei is ... ;-)

Just too many things to do today and was struggling to cope with the hustling and bustling of today's office business. An hour meeting turns out to be out of control which encroached into lunch time. Emails after emails, urgent action items begging to be closed out ASAP summed up my day. By the time I was leaving for home, I was hobbling and wobbling like as if that was the last strand of energy left. Once at home there is nothing better than hitting for the bed for few hours doze .... the mother of all mental fatigues I guess ... zzzzzZZZZZ.

"The Banquet" Movie

Finally, I was able to spare my time to see this movie despite holding on to the DVD for weeks. To sum up, it's all about power struggle, vengeance, desire, love and hatred all rolled into one. Having seen it, somehow I've mixed feelings about it. The ending parts just doesn't seem to be well placed. Too abrupt and doesn't give any lasting impression to me. Oh well it could be becoz' of my high expectation .... I would be expecting this one to be explosive but unfortunately it isn't ... maybe not this time ....

Back To Business ... At Last

So much with having to tempt with open house invitations over a couple of weeks ago. My weight losing feat (5 kg) during Ramadhan is now a lost plot. I just couldn't believe it that I'm gaining about 4 kg in less than 2 weeks. So it really is time to redeem the lost battle.

I've started off with badminton on Tue, footie yesterday, planning for a jog today and probably badminton again on Fri. I hope I'll be back on track in no time and with brunei marathon just around the corner, the urgency to embark on the recovery plan should be very timely then.

Didn't really realise about the thefts till today's BB news. I used to buy my copy at this one particular sundries shop which opens as early as 6 am. But yesterday strangely enough this outlet was without their BB supply when I was doing my usual stop over on the way to the office. However, another outlet at the other end of the block was selling their copies. Normally when there is disruption in delivery then the whole outlets are affected. This is possibly the 1st time BBs are being stolen in larger scale. I certainly can't live thru' the day without my BB and I use to read them before starting off with my daily office chores. What were these people thinking .... ?

It has been quite a while since the last time I was hooked with my PS2 which is now more or less collecting more dusts than usual. But when it come to Final Fantasy then it's business as usual for "seasonal" gamer like me. And thanks to my nephew who had reminded me earlier that it's already available at local store coz' I'm not that pretty updated these days. The opening sequel is convincing enough for me to expect very promising prospects from this latest release.

Hari Raya Day 3 Lil' Progress

It's day 3 of the hari raya and is real slow this year with my visitation hitlists. Now let see ... I've spend the whole day 1 with my in laws, day 2 then was solely with my parents and today day 3 I'm taking a break at home. Gonna hit the road tomorrow for a drive to BSB for visits to my wifey's relatives.

When your pda is inundated with open house invitations instead of meeting appointments, then you get reminded immediately that this is hari raya time ... lol. So these days it's still down to setting the priorities right with so little time to play around. Will concentrate first with visitations to siblings, in laws, friends' open houses and other relatives/friends being the usual scrappy efforts along the way. So who say we don't have deadlines to meet for hari raya despite being away from office ...he.he..

Scientists haven't been able to take their eyes off a nearby stellar collision. This image, snapped by the Hubble Space Telescope and released October 16, is the sharpest yet of the merging Antennae Galaxies.

The spiral galaxies, named for long antenna-like arms that extend far from the galaxies' centers, began colliding only a few hundred million years ago. The pair represents one of the closest galactic collisions to Earth, and one of the youngest known to science.

The reddish-orange blobs to the right and left of the picture's center are the two galactic cores—consisting mostly of old stars crisscrossed by filaments of dust (brown).

What has researchers really excited, though, are the blue star-forming regions, which are surrounded by hot glowing hydrogen gas (pink). Billions of new stars will be formed by the energetic collision, scientists say.

The brightest and most compact star-forming regions are called super star clusters.

By determining the age of clusters in the image, scientists now know that only about 10 percent of super star clusters will last for a substantial amount of time. These collections will most likely go on to form globular clusters—densely packed spheres of stars that orbit a galaxy—similar to globular formations in our home galaxy, the Milky Way.

The rest of the super star clusters will disperse, with the stars born there disappearing into the galaxies' background.

Some +ves During This Ramadhan

Hardly a week to go and times really clocking fast with some +ves at least heading in the bag for the takings :
1. Weight loss ... down by 4 kgs and at the rate it's going I'm sure I'll shed at least 6 kgs by the end of Ramadhan. Traditionally, this is the right time when it's a lot feasible to achieve such feat. No late supper, minimal intakes during breaking of fast, and simple "sahur" of oatmeal/dates/water does the job well amazingly even with zilch exercise ... emmm.
2. My 8 yrs old kid finally learned how to fast "faster". She didn't made it last year not even once, but this year she's breaking the records apart from her 1st day blip and my 4 yrs old is hopefully learning to come to terms with her "observer" backbenching status ... he.he.
3. Family togetherness starts at the dinner table, so it unites the family members at least for a month straight which is quite impossible to do at some other times of the year. I call it family ties rehabilitation exercise.
4. My injured legs recovering at last ... thanks goodness that this is the only opportunity when I'll be affording myself a lengthy break from physical exertions. Otherwise, it takes ages and ages to recuperate and I certainly need fresh legs for the upcoming brunei marathon.

The predicament certainly was not forthcoming but that's the reality. SMS gonna be just another closing chapter in the history book. It's hard to take morever like me who studied more than 10 years back in the mid 70's. Ironically , the principal himself used to be my classmate back then. I knew all along that he was striving so hard indeed to ensure that they keep afloat in the face of adversity but with such small numbers of students at disposal who could blame him. During the 80's it was normal to cramp 50 plus students in a room. But these days with so many schools mushrooming it's almost impossible to attract new students let alone improving or investing in the school facilities.

My personal contribution to the school during the golden jubilee anniversary in 2005 was certainly will be my last one. Such a pity that the teachers will be retrenched in the process. I know that some of them were in the business for ages so they might be the ones that most pyschologically impacted. The senior master, Michael Nayagam in particular joined when I was still at the school and 25 years service is a testament of his loyalty to the school. Not easy to get such a committed person and my sympathy to him. He must be thoroughly upset to learn such abrupt decision to close down.

Nothing much we can do tho'. Just hope that they will move forward, realign their career to the good and deep inside our hearts we'll certainly cherish those good memories.

I was quite busy this week with so many preparations to make for next week workshop ... finally a breather which is very welcoming indeed. So much with trying hard to prepare for next year major activities and it's all about getting the key team members with different backgrounds and disciplines to ensure every aspects, risks and opportunities are mapped and considered on "paper", hence the term "implementation projects on paper". But the good thing stemming from such exercise is probably teamworking. The team decides so at the end of the day the team gets the credit or the blame. However time will tell if those implementations on paper will be realised as a reality ...he..he.. challenges for next year are already looming and we're only just approaching end of Sep. duh ...

Sg Basong Recreational Park, Tutong

I think perhaps this is the least frequented spot in my "must visit wish list" and it was only earlier this year that I finally got the real opportunity to be there .... maiden one so to speak. Nice spot really and if you can make out the fine thread like path on the satellite image, that's the route for a short hike which is very conducive for any family. I mean it's less treacherous and a manageable feat for smaller kids so all can enjoy those nice views along the trail.

The experience is more worthwhile considering that we did the cookings there as well .... freshly cooked lunch coupled with "ambuyat" just summed up our field day .... it reinforced further my belief that there's definitely life out there.

Medical Treatment for Endometriosis

After my wife's endometriosis surgery, she got to be post treated with Zoladex injection to reduce its recurrence which will be administered in 4 weeks intervals with maximum duration of 6 months. A single injection costs more than B$ 600 which is very costly indeed. So it beats me wondering those people who complain a lot with our "free" medical service.

A friend of mine who at one time got his kid hospitalised in Phillipines got charged more than B$ 200 for a few nights stay and that was just a minor illness. So think about it ... are we not so damned lucky being a Bruneian after all ... maybe some people just never get to look at the real picture .... emmm ....
